Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania, in 1896 was the seat of Carbon County and a shipping town in the anthracite coal region. Coal from the mines on Summit Hill reached the town by gravity railroad and was loaded onto canal boats and railroad cars along the Lehigh River, so the valley's economy rose and fell with the mines. The town's steep hillsides and river gorge also drew summer tourists, who rode the Switchback Railway up and down the mountain for the views. Flagstaff Mountain, the high ground above the town, offered the broadest look at the river, the rail lines, and the rows of houses tucked into the narrow valley. The town would later be renamed Jim Thorpe in 1954.
