Quakake Valley, pictured from Point Lookout in 1896, lies in Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal country, which had shaped the local economy for two generations. Nearby collieries relied on laborers from Ireland, Wales, Germany, and increasingly Eastern and Southern Europe, and railroads such as the Reading carried the coal to markets in eastern cities. The Panic of 1893 had brought layoffs, shortened work weeks, and wage cuts to many mines, and families were still recovering from those hard years. For residents, the valley meant farmland and wooded ridges set against the smoke of breakers and company houses, with daily life keyed to the mine whistle and the church or lodge hall.
