Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, photographed from the Wilkes-Barre mountains in 1896, was at the center of the anthracite coal trade. The valley's collieries, breakers, and rail yards along the Susquehanna River employed thousands of miners, many of them immigrants from Wales, Ireland, and central and eastern Europe, and the coal shipped out from Wilkes-Barre and neighboring towns such as Pittston, Plymouth, and Kingston. Wilkes-Barre, the Luzerne County seat, had grown into a city of churches, schools, and commercial blocks around its public square, and its residents took pride in the valley's long memory of the 1778 Battle of Wyoming. Mining accidents, labor disputes, and the seasonal rhythms of coal demand shaped daily life as much as the landscape did.
