Beaver Valley, in Beaver County about thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, was in 1902 part of the Ohio River industrial belt that supplied the region's steel, iron, and glass trades. Mills along the Ohio and the Beaver River drew workers and families from across western Pennsylvania and from Eastern and Southern Europe, and the towns of Beaver Falls, Rochester, and Monaca grew up around that work. Railroad lines and river barges carried coal, iron, and finished goods out of the valley, tying local employment to markets in Pittsburgh and beyond. Residents of the valley knew their home as a place where the mill whistle set the daily schedule and where the river, with its ferries and steamboats, was still a main route of travel and trade.
