Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1902 was a city of roughly 100,000 people built on anthracite coal, with mines, breakers, and rail yards spread across the Lackawanna Valley. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad ran major shops there, and lace curtain mills and iron works provided other steady jobs. That spring the anthracite coal strike began, and by summer tens of thousands of miners across the region had stopped work to press operators over wages and hours, drawing national attention to the city. Residents who knew Scranton as the Electric City, after its early electric streetcars, followed the dispute closely from the streets below the hills.
