Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1916 was a coal and railroad city in the Lackawanna Valley, with its economy built on anthracite mining and the shops and yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. Its population had grown rapidly over the previous half century, drawing Welsh, Irish, Italian, Polish, and other immigrant families to work in the mines, mills, and rail yards. Silk and lace mills also employed many women and young workers, giving the city a manufacturing base beyond coal. Downtown streets like Mulberry and Madison, shown here, were the commercial heart of the city, where residents shopped, did business, and followed civic affairs, and the city was known locally as the "Electric City" for its early adoption of electric streetcars and lighting.
