Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1912 was an anthracite coal city built along the Lackawanna River valley, and its fortunes still rose and fell with the mines that ringed it. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad maintained major shops and yards there, so railroad work and coal shipments shaped daily life for many households. Textile mills, including the lace curtain works for which the city was known, added factory jobs, and immigrants from Ireland, Wales, and Eastern and Southern Europe filled many of them and the mines. Residents of the day knew Scranton as a hard-working industrial center whose population had grown quickly over the previous few decades, and its streets and hillside neighborhoods reflected that rapid expansion.
