Mauch Chunk, the Carbon County seat in the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania, was a coal town in 1879, built on anthracite carried down from the surrounding mountains. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company and the Lehigh Valley Railroad moved coal toward canals and markets, and the wider region was still feeling the hard times of the Panic of 1873 and the labor unrest of 1877. Bear Mountain rises on the far side of the Lehigh River, where the gorge narrows and the tracks and canal share the ground with the town. Visitors had begun arriving for scenery and the Switchback gravity railroad, which hauled coal cars down the mountainside and later carried tourists as well.
