Bellefield, a hillside district in Pittsburgh's Oakland section, sat in 1905 at the edge of a city built on steel, iron, coal, and glass. Mill smoke drifted over the rivers below, while the surrounding hills were filling with homes for managers, professors, and merchants who wanted air and quiet away from the works. The Carnegie Institute had opened its library, museum, and music hall in Oakland only a decade earlier, and Schenley Park, given to the city by Mary Schenley, was becoming the green retreat that the district's residents valued. Pittsburgh's growing schools and cultural institutions gave the area a civic identity that set it apart from the mill valleys, and this view from the hills shows how those two worlds sat side by side.
