Cherrytree, a small coal-mining village in Indiana County in western Pennsylvania, was photographed in 1913, when bituminous coal was the economic foundation of the surrounding hills. Most households depended on wages from the local mines, and many families were recent immigrants from southern and eastern Europe who lived in company-owned rows of houses near the tipple and the railroad siding. Coal shipped by rail to the industrial centers of Pittsburgh and the Great Lakes, so the rhythm of the village followed shift whistles and freight schedules. In March 1913 a severe flood on the Ohio and Allegheny river systems had already reminded western Pennsylvanians how closely their fortunes were tied to waterways and rail lines.
