In 1913, Easton, Pennsylvania, sat where the Lehigh River meets the Delaware, a position that had shaped its economy for generations. Canal barges and several railroad lines carried coal, iron, cement, and manufactured goods through the city, and its factories, including silk and iron works, drew workers from the surrounding Lehigh Valley. Across the Delaware, Phillipsburg, New Jersey, was linked to Easton by bridge, so the two towns shared commerce and daily travel. Lafayette College, on the hills above the old business district, gave the city a educational reputation that residents took pride in. The panorama shows a town whose streets, church spires, and riverfront were tied closely to the industry and transportation that kept it growing.
