Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1896 was a steel town built around the Bethlehem Iron Company, which had shifted from iron to steel-making in the 1870s and had grown into one of the largest armor and structural steel producers in the country. The works lay along the Lehigh River, and the company's output went into railroad rails, bridges, and naval armor plate. The town's population had swelled as immigrant workers from Central and Eastern Europe came to work the furnaces and rolling mills alongside longtime Lehigh Valley families. Many residents knew their town as the home of the works, with its shifts, whistles, and the steady glow of its furnaces shaping daily life.
