Stony Creek Curve, in the Stony Creek valley of western Pennsylvania, shows a rail corridor in 1896, when the region's economy rested on coal, timber, and iron and steel. The Pennsylvania Railroad's main lines carried coal and finished metal out of the hills toward Pittsburgh and eastern markets, and the towns along them grew around mines, mills, and rail yards. Johnstown, a short distance up the Conemaugh system, was then a major steel town with the Cambria Steel Company as its largest employer. Residents in the 1890s still spoke of the Johnstown Flood of 1889, which had killed more than 2,000 people and swept away much of the city, and rebuilding in the years after was a visible part of daily life. The railroad itself was a point of local pride, and photographs of its lines were used to show the company's reach and engineering.
