Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, in 1911 was a small river borough whose livelihood depended heavily on summer visitors. The Delaware River has cut a deep notch through the Kittatinny Ridge here, flanked by Mount Minsi on the Pennsylvania side and Mount Tammany across the water in New Jersey, and that scenery drew vacationers from New York and Philadelphia by rail. Hotels and boarding houses along the river catered to guests who came for the mountain air, hiking, and boating, and the shops and livery services of the town depended on their seasonal custom. Year-round residents knew the place as the gateway through the mountains rather than a center of heavy industry.
