Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, was a summer resort by 1911, drawing visitors from New York and Philadelphia to the place where the Delaware River cuts through Kittatinny Ridge. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad brought many of those travelers through the gap, and hotels, boarding houses, and cottages lined the riverfront and the slopes of Mount Tammany and Mount Minsi. Local life followed the seasons, with the tourist trade peaking in summer while year-round residents depended on services, small trades, and the rail traffic. The town's value to its visitors rested on its scenery, its river, and its mountain views, which made it a familiar stop for city families seeking fresh air in the early twentieth century.
