Clarion State Normal School, in the borough of Clarion in northwestern Pennsylvania, was in 1919 one of the state's normal schools that trained men and women to teach in public classrooms. The surrounding county had been shaped by the lumber and tanning trades of the late nineteenth century, and many residents still earned their living in timber, mills, and related work. Pennsylvania's normal schools were state institutions that drew students from rural townships, where a teaching certificate was often the most accessible route to a professional career. The years after the First World War brought growing enrollments and mounting pressure to raise the standards of teacher preparation. Local people knew the school as a steady civic presence in a region whose fortunes rose and fell with its resource industries.
