Wittenberg College, a Lutheran school founded in 1845, sat on the western edge of Springfield, Ohio, in 1910, when the city of roughly 50,000 people was one of the state's leading manufacturing centers. Its factories made farm machinery, especially the mowers, binders, and harvesting equipment of the Champion Company, and the rail lines that ran through town carried those machines to farms across the Midwest. Springfield's growth drew workers, merchants, and church congregations, and the college, which trained ministers and teachers, was among the institutions that gave the city its reputation as a place of schools and churches as well as factories. Residents in 1910 would have known the campus as a quiet center of learning set beside a booming industrial town.
