Akron, Ohio, in 1911 was a fast-growing industrial city of roughly 69,000 people, several times its size of the 1870s, as rubber manufacturing drew workers from nearby farms and from abroad. Firestone had begun making tires in Akron in 1900, and Goodyear, founded there in 1898, was expanding its plants and workforce through the decade. Factory whistles set the rhythm of daily life, and streetcar lines carried shift workers between the mills and the neighborhoods on the surrounding hills. Residents already knew the city for its tires and rubber goods, while the Ohio and Erie Canal, once the town's lifeline, had lost most of its traffic to the railroads.
