Toledo, Ohio, in 1911 was an industrial river and lake port of roughly 170,000 people, where glassmaking, bottle machinery, and the young auto parts trade drew workers from across Ohio and from Europe. Freight moved through its harbor on the Maumee River and Lake Erie, and rail lines tied its factories to markets across the Midwest. The city's large Catholic population supported parish schools, hospitals, and convents, and religious communities such as the Ursulines were a visible part of neighborhood life. This panoramic photograph records a banquet held at the Ursuline convent, a gathering that would have marked a formal occasion for the sisters and their guests. Such events were part of the close church and community ties that shaped civic life in the city during the early twentieth century.
