Brady Lake, in Portage County in northeastern Ohio, was a small rural lakeside community in 1911, and summer cottages and day-trip visitors gave it a seasonal rhythm that shaped its local economy. In those years the region's farms, small mills, and brickworks supplied nearby towns, while Akron, about a dozen miles to the north, was growing fast on the rubber trade. Electric interurban trolleys and country roads carried city families out to the water on summer weekends, and that traffic brought people to the lake for swimming, boating, and picnics. Haines Photo Co., a commercial studio based in Conneaut, a lake port in Ashtabula County, made this view for a regional audience of residents and visitors who knew the lake as a place to escape the heat of town.
