In 1911 Knoxville was a city of about 30,000 people on the Tennessee River, where lumber, coal, marble, and iron moved out by rail. Southern Railway, which had absorbed the older East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia line, kept its shops and yards in the city, so railroad jobs were a steady source of work for families. The Appalachian Exposition of 1910 had drawn attention to the region's forests and minerals, and local business leaders were promoting Knoxville as the gateway to the mountains. Gay Street and Market Square formed the commercial heart of town, while the university on its hill and the churches along the main avenues shaped everyday life for residents who knew the city as a rail and trade center in the Appalachian South.
