Knoxville in 1864 was a small river town of roughly two thousand people, set where the Holston and French Broad rivers meet to form the Tennessee. George N. Barnard made this view from the cupola of the East Tennessee University building on the hill above town, looking across the rooftops toward the valley. Before the war, the local Unionist newspaper, the Knoxville Whig, edited by William G. Brownlow, had been a loud voice against secession. Barnard was working in 1864 as a photographer connected with Union military operations, so the picture records a city where soldiers, supply wagons, and army business were part of everyday life.
