Nashville, Tennessee, in 1905 was a railroad city, and its passenger and freight terminal sat at the heart of that trade. The Union Station that opened in 1900 served several lines, and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway, based in the city, carried goods and travelers across the South. Cotton and tobacco moved through local warehouses, while insurance companies and printing houses gave the downtown office district steady work. Residents also knew Nashville as the state capital and as home to Vanderbilt University, whose campus lay a few miles south of the business district. A terminal view like this one shows the tracks, sheds, and crowds that made the city a regional crossroads in the early twentieth century.
