Roger Williams University in north Nashville, Tennessee, was a Black Baptist school in 1916, part of a network of institutions that northern Baptist mission societies had founded after the Civil War to train teachers and ministers for formerly enslaved people and their children. Nashville at that time was the state capital and a rail center, with the Louisville and Nashville and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis lines shaping its growth. Its Black community supported a dense web of churches, schools, and businesses, and Nashville was becoming a publishing center for African American religious literature. The campus, like much of Tennessee in the years before the First World War, operated under segregation, and its students and faculty worked within the limits that Jim Crow laws imposed on Black education and civic life.
