Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, sat on the rise above a small county seat about thirty miles east of Nashville in 1916. The school had been founded in 1842 and was affiliated with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and by the early twentieth century its campus served mostly young men from middle Tennessee preparing for law, teaching, and the ministry. Lebanon itself depended on farming, tobacco and livestock markets, and the railroad that connected it to Nashville. Its Cumberland School of Law was among the better-known programs in the state, and the town's social life revolved around the college calendar, church services, and commencement. The panorama captures the campus at a moment before the First World War reshaped enrollment across the country.
