Memphis, Tennessee, in 1910 was a river city of roughly 130,000 people, built on cotton, hardwood lumber, and the steamboat and rail traffic that moved them. Cotton brokers and compresses lined the riverfront, and the city's hardwood trade drew buyers from across the country to its yards. Streetcars, horse-drawn drays, and foot traffic shared the downtown thoroughfares, which were crowded with merchants, clerks, and dockworkers from the nearby rail depots. Memphians of that decade still remembered the yellow fever epidemics of the 1870s and 1890s, which had emptied the city and shaped its public health reforms. Beale Street, a few blocks from the river, was the center of Black business and music life, and the streets around it were busy with shops, churches, and saloons.
