In 1910 Memphis was a Mississippi River city of roughly 130,000 people, and its prosperity rested largely on cotton, which moved through its warehouses and compresses on the way to mills in the North and abroad. Hardwood lumber floated down the river from the surrounding forests, and several rail lines converged on the city, adding to its commercial weight. The downtown bluff rose above the riverfront wharves, where steamboats and barges still worked alongside freight cars. A few blocks inland, Beale Street was the center of Black business and social life in the city, and Memphis politics was on the verge of being dominated by the organization of E. H. Crump.
