Memphis, Tennessee, in 1906 was a Mississippi River port and one of the largest cotton markets in the interior South, with railroads and hardwood lumber mills feeding its warehouses and wholesale houses. The city had grown to roughly 100,000 people after the yellow fever epidemics of the late 1870s had nearly emptied it and then left it to rebuild its reputation for commerce and public health. Church life was central to civic affairs, and the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, an Episcopal organization of laymen founded in Chicago in 1883, drew local men into religious work, visiting, and mission activity. This group portrait records those men as a community of business and church members, the kind of people who ran the city's congregations, clubs, and charities. The picture shows Memphis at a moment when its prosperity still rested on cotton and river trade.
