Jonesborough, Tennessee, sits in Washington County in the state's northeast corner, and by 1909 it had been a town for about 130 years, founded in 1779 and long claimed as the state's oldest. Its economy rested on farming and the trade that moved through the county seat, with merchants, lawyers, and county officials doing business along its brick-fronted streets. Main Street and the crossing with Cherokee Street formed the commercial and civic center, where courthouse business, stores, and church and fraternal life drew people in from the surrounding countryside. Residents of the day would have known the town as the old seat of government in the Tennessee hill country, a place proud of its age and its early history, even as newer towns and rail lines drew growth elsewhere in the region.
