The Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nashville, Tennessee, was still standing in 1909 as a leftover from the Tennessee Centennial Exposition of 1897, when the city built a full-scale replica of the Athens temple to mark the state's hundredth year. Nashville then depended on publishing houses, insurance companies, and schools such as Vanderbilt University and Fisk University, and streetcar lines carried residents out to the park's lawns and lakes on summer weekends. The temple had been built as a temporary exposition structure, and its plaster facade was already weathering, a problem local leaders would not fully address until well after this photograph was taken. Statewide prohibition was also a major political question in Tennessee that year, and it shaped debates across the city's churches, businesses, and newspapers.
