Nashville, Tennessee, in 1864 was a city under Union occupation, having fallen to federal forces in February 1862 and remaining in their hands for the rest of the war. The photograph was taken from Fort Negley, a large earthwork and stone fortification built on a hill south of the city by enslaved and freed Black laborers, and it looks out over the capital's rooftops and the Cumberland River. George N. Barnard, a photographer attached to Union military work, made views like this one to document the defenses and the occupied town. Before the war Nashville had been a major river port, a center of publishing and the cotton trade, and home to several colleges, and its population had swollen with refugees, soldiers and freedpeople by 1864.
