Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1909 was still a young institution, having opened in 1875 on a hilltop campus funded by a $1 million gift from the shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. It was founded under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and drew students largely from across the South. Nashville was then a regional center for publishing, insurance, and wholesale trade, with rail lines running into its downtown. Under Chancellor James H. Kirkland, who had led the university since 1893, the professional schools, including medicine, were growing, and local residents would have known the campus as a church-linked school steadily building its reputation.
