Jonesborough, the seat of Washington County in upper East Tennessee, was the oldest town in the state by 1909, having been founded in 1779 and long known for its early courthouse, churches, and academies. By then its economy rested mainly on farming, with corn, tobacco, livestock, and orchard fruit moving through local markets and small businesses on its brick-lined main street. The railroads that reshaped the region in the 1880s and 1890s had bypassed the old town for nearby Johnson City, which grew quickly while Jonesborough's population held nearly steady. Residents in 1909 would have known it as a quiet county seat that prized its age, with its courthouse square, its churches, and its schools as the center of civic and social life.
