Memphis, Tennessee, in 1910 was a river city of about 130,000 people, built on bluffs above the Mississippi. Cotton was its commercial engine, with brokers and warehouses handling the crop, and the city also ranked among the nation's leading hardwood lumber markets. The Illinois Central and several other railroads converged there, tying the riverfront docks to farms across the Delta. Residents still remembered the yellow fever epidemics of the 1870s, which had driven off much of the population and prompted a new sanitary system. Beale Street, a few blocks from the river, was already the center of Black business and entertainment life in the city.
