Johnson City, in Washington County in upper East Tennessee, in 1910 was a railroad town that had grown up around its depot and rail junctions. Rail lines brought in freight, passengers, and new businesses, and the town's economy rested on the rail yards, warehouses, and the stores and shops that served travelers and workers. The Clinchfield Railroad, pushing its line through the mountains to the south and west in these years, added to the activity and drew workers and new residents. Residents of the period knew the town as a crossroads of the region, where trains, merchants, and local farm families met. The panorama captures a community still expanding, its streets and rooftops spreading out from the tracks.
