Brown University's Republican Club gathered for this portrait in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1916, a presidential election year. The city was then a major center of jewelry manufacturing and textile mills, and its factories drew workers from Ireland, Italy, and French Canada. Rhode Island had long voted Republican, and the club's members would have backed Charles Evans Hughes against Democrat Woodrow Wilson, whose handling of the Mexican border raids and the war in Europe was a central issue. Founded in 1764 on College Hill, Brown drew many students from old New England families, so a campus party group carried the state's long partisan loyalties onto the hill.
