Esmond, a mill village in the town of Smithfield in Providence County, Rhode Island, was built around the textile works that gave it a name and an economy. In 1920, the mill was one of the many textile operations that made northern Rhode Island a center of cloth production, and it depended on a workforce of local families and immigrants who lived in company-era housing near the river. Rhode Island's mills were running at a time when the state's manufacturing base was already beginning to face competition from southern mills and changing markets, a shift that would reshape mill towns across the region in the years ahead. For the people who lived in Esmond, the mill's whistle and shift schedule set the rhythm of daily life, and the village's identity rose and fell with the fortunes of the works.
