Providence, Rhode Island, was a busy industrial port city in December 1913, when this panorama was taken to mark the opening of a new dock. The city's economy rested on manufacturing, especially jewelry and silverware, along with textile mills and metalworking shops that sent goods out by rail and by water. Its harbor on the Providence River connected it to Narragansett Bay and to coastal shipping, so new wharves like this one mattered to merchants, dock workers, and the freight lines that depended on them. Residents of the time knew the city as a center of New England commerce, and a new pier in December 1913 signaled that the waterfront was still expanding to keep pace with that trade.
