Providence, Rhode Island, in 1909 was one of the country's leading centers of jewelry and silverware manufacturing, and its textile mills and machine shops drew workers from across New England and from immigrant communities in Italy, Ireland, and French Canada. The State House on Smith Street had been completed only a few years earlier, in 1904, and its white dome dominated the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Nearby stood the State Normal School, where the state trained teachers for its public schools, a role that made it one of the most visible civic institutions on the hill. Providence was then approaching 225,000 residents, and its streets, trolley lines, and church spires were part of daily life for the people who worked and studied in these buildings.
