The Rhode Island State Normal School, pictured here on Capitol Hill in Providence in 1909, was the state's main training ground for public school teachers, a role it had filled since opening in 1871. Providence was then one of New England's largest manufacturing cities, with jewelry shops, machine works and textile mills employing thousands, and its harbor on Narragansett Bay handled coastal and foreign shipping. The school stood near the State House, so its students and faculty were part of the civic life of a city government centered on that hill. Many graduates went on to teach in the mill villages and farm towns across the state, where classrooms were often crowded and short of money.
