Brown University occupied College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1909, about a century and a half after its founding in 1764 as the College of Rhode Island. The city below was one of the nation's leading centers of jewelry manufacturing, with textile mills along the rivers and machine shops feeding an industrial economy. Trolley lines, railroads, and the wharves on the Providence River carried goods and workers between the hill and the downtown. Women students were taught through Pembroke College, which had been affiliated with Brown since 1891, and football games and commencement drew alumni back to the campus each year.
