Brown University, on College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, looked much as it does in this 1911 view, with its main green and academic halls spread across the hillside above the city. The college had been chartered in 1764 as the College of Rhode Island and took the name of its benefactor, Nicholas Brown, in 1804. In 1911 Providence was one of New England's leading manufacturing cities, with jewelry shops, textile and metalworking plants, and a busy harbor on the Providence River that tied the city to coastal trade. Students and townspeople alike knew the campus as the anchor of the city's educational life, and the college's growing ties to the city's industry and civic affairs were part of its daily reality.
