Brown University, photographed in 1909 on its College Hill campus in Providence, Rhode Island, traced its origins to a charter of 1764 and took its present name in 1804, honoring the benefactor Nicholas Brown Jr. In the early twentieth century Providence was a manufacturing city, known for jewelry and silverware and for textile mills along its rivers and rail lines. The university stood apart from those works on its hill, and under President William H. P. Faunce it drew students from New England and beyond. Pembroke College, the women's coordinate college, shared the institution's academic life, so the campus view also reflects a city where schools and factories were both central to civic affairs.
