Providence in 1922 was a manufacturing city of roughly 240,000 people, known nationally for its jewelry and silverware makers, along with textile mills and machine shops that drew workers from across New England and from immigrant communities in the city's mill neighborhoods. The New Homeopathic Hospital rose in this growing city, serving a population that had grown steadily since the late nineteenth century and that relied on a mix of private physicians and charitable hospitals. Homeopathy, a system of medicine using highly diluted remedies, still had dedicated practitioners and patients in Rhode Island, and a hospital built for that practice reflected the variety of medical choices available to families at the time. The building also stood in a decade when Providence hospitals were expanding to meet demand left by the 1918 influenza epidemic.
