Providence, Rhode Island, in 1908 was one of the country's leading manufacturing cities, known especially for jewelry and silverware makers, along with textile and machine shops that drew workers from across New England and from immigrant communities in Europe. Its harbor on Narragansett Bay and its rail connections kept goods moving in and out of the city. Arbor Day, observed each spring, was promoted by schools and civic groups as a way to teach children about trees and to beautify crowded neighborhoods, and planting ceremonies like this one in a city park gave residents a chance to see their public grounds improved. For many local families, the city's parks were among the few open spaces within easy reach of mill and factory districts.
