Exchange Place in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, in 1903 was a working crossroads of the city's commercial core. Providence had grown into one of New England's leading manufacturing centers, especially known for jewelry and silverware, and its population had passed 175,000 by the 1900 census. Union Station, which stood on Exchange Place, carried passengers from several railroad lines into the city, while electric street cars moved shoppers, clerks, and factory hands along the streets that fed into the square. Residents knew the area as the place where a trip to Boston, a ride to the mills, or an afternoon of errands all began.
