Whiteside, Tennessee, sits on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad where the line climbs over Walden Ridge in the southeastern part of the state. In 1864 the route was a vital supply artery for Union armies in the Military Division of the Mississippi, which needed it to move men, rations, and ammunition toward Chattanooga and the campaign against Atlanta. Photographer George N. Barnard was working for the Union army that year, documenting the rail lines, depots, and fortifications that kept that supply chain open. The war had turned this stretch of mountain country into a place of guards, work crews, and constant traffic, and soldiers passing through would have known it chiefly as a railroad post on the way south.
