Youngstown, Ohio, in 1910 was one of the country's busiest steel towns, and the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Company stood among its largest mills along the Mahoning River. The plant drew heavily on the rail lines that crisscrossed the Mahoning Valley, carrying iron ore, coal, and finished steel in and out of the district. Mill work attracted large numbers of immigrants from Italy, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, who settled in crowded neighborhoods near the furnaces and mills, so that the town's churches, lodges, and saloons reflected many languages. Carnegie Steel was then the largest part of the American steel business, and residents of the valley measured their prosperity, and their risks, by the shifts and whistles of the works.
