Lake Toxaway, in the mountains of Transylvania County, North Carolina, was a summer resort in 1909, about a decade after its dam created the lake and a large hotel rose on its shore. Wealthy families from Charleston, Savannah, and northern cities came up the mountains each summer to fish, sail, and take in the views, and the Toxaway Inn served as the center of that social season. The resort drew its guests largely from the seasonal trade of the Blue Ridge, while local farms, sawmills, and tanning operations supplied much of the surrounding work. The inn's fortunes were tied to the lake itself, and a dam failure in 1916 drained the basin and ended the resort's grand era.
