Canton, North Carolina, in 1910 was a small mountain town in Haywood County that had been reshaped by a single industry. The Champion Fibre Company, whose backers came from Ohio, had built a large paper mill on the Pigeon River, using the river's power and the surrounding forests to make wood pulp and paper. Workers came from nearby farms and coves to take jobs at the mill and in the timber woods, and the company built houses and other facilities that tied much of daily life to the mill's shifts. Growth brought new roads, schools, and churches, but it also meant the river, which the mill drew on and drained into, began to carry the marks of industry downstream. Most residents would have known the town first as the paper mill.
